The Hierophant is one that follows what is laid out before him.
Pulling the Hierophant upright means you are desiring the conventional. You're following a path that is already set for you, which is not necessarily a bad thing. The Hierophant suggests that this is actually something positive. You're falling into well-respected, well-followed conventional beliefs, paths, and trains of thought. They're well-established, meaning there's something valuable within them.
When the Hierophant is reversed, it often means you're feeling constrained by convention.
Instead of desiring to follow set beliefs, like when you pull the Hierophant upright, you're feeling controlled by these established routines. You have a strong desire to break free from these conventions and probably will due to you feeling as if they are constricting you from being your true self, or following your true desires.
The Hierophant is telling you to evaluate the steps you wish to take toward your goal - do you wish to follow convention or try something new?
